Weak of faith and fraught with temptation lot's wife defied the words of God and turned to gaze upon the destruction.For her failing she was turned to salt.

Lot in his grief took the finger of his beloved wife and kept it with him on his journey.

This represents the finger of Lot's wife and is to remind us in times of ill fate that we must keep moving forward and not dwell on that which has gone by.
